RMAN backup retention question

Hi,

We have a database that we back up (using RMAN) daily with logs every 4 hours and when one of the tablespaces fills, we switch the tablespace to read only and back up that tablespace and keep it forever.  We are changing from  our Tivoli backup system to EMC's data domain backup.  Previously Tivoli maintained the retention period (for the tablespaces that are kept forever), now RMAN will handle it.  I just want to verify with someone that I am doing it correctly.  My default retention policy will be 7 days for the database backups and for the paticular tablespaces that I want
