US PAY: Year End Processing

Our company started acting on Year-end activities pretty late and now our DBAs are really struggling to apply year end patches  (they are trying to apply End of Year 2010 Phase 2, & Year End 2010 HRMS Family Pack K Rollup (RUP) 5 patch).

Below are my few basic questions:

---Are these patches really mandatory for year-end processing?? 

---Is there any way to run Year-end pre-process without applying these patches?

--or in other words, is there any other way of producing W2's without these patches?
