index creation.

 hi i want to partition an un partitioned table and it has an index an the column which is candidate for partitioning ,as i checked oracle allows me to create simple index and partitioned index for that special column. i want to choose simple index (non partitioned index) i just want to know pros and cons.please advice.
any tip can be highly helpful
