Item with multiple configurations

Hi

We are on Oracle 11.5.10.2

We have a business need to make and buy an item in multiple configurations.  

Some of my associates have suggested using new item numbers for each configuration, however I struggle with how to effectively pull them together from a customer service and costing perspective.

How do we make it seamless to our customers?
