Issue with updating a Date Field using Web Service

 I am trying to insert/update a Date field specifically "DateofBirth" in the Contact object using Web Service and I am using the format "MM/dd/yyyy hh:mm:ss". But the field is not getting updated. When I read the values it shows a value of "1/1/0001", but no value is shown in the screen. Not sure what step or format I am missing. Any help is appreciated.
