TNS resolution

 We are planning to use 'service_name' in our enviroment for database connectivity and set up parameter 'service_names' in init.ora in our test database. Client connections work fine with TNS entry (service_name= XXXXX) but fails with (SID=$ORACLE_SID). Is it not backward compatible? We can have new users start using 'service_name=' format in their tnsnames, but there are other existing users who use (SID=XXX) and we don't want any loss in connectivity. Please advise.
