shmmax interpretation

I might have already asked this question before, but I can't seem to find my previous post.  I have five database instances on one server. The server shmmax is set to 4096000000. Is this number the total allocation allowed for the sum of sga for all five instances?

I plan to set the sga_max_size for the five instances as follows:

415M
630M
400M
400M
415M

So, technically, those should still be within the OS allowed range, right? since I guess those add up to about 2.5 and maybe close to 3G
