Is it possible to change un-indexed field to an indexed field?

We are using CRMOD with a backoffice connection. The reference number in the backoffice is mapped to a field in CRMOD that is not an indexed field (not prepared for fast lookup).
Is it possible to change the receiving field in CRMOD to an indexed field?
