PIM Catalog Category Mapping

Does anybody have a good explanation of what the Catalog Category Mapping feature in PIM is suppossed to do?

I am trying to find a good way of mapping PIM Item Catalog Categories to Inventory Categories so that when an item is created in an ICC it is automatically given an Inventory Category - any suggestions for doing this would be appreciated.
