Smart Card authentication to the database?

Does anyone know how to use a smart card certificate to authenticate directly to the database (11gR2). The cert corresponds to an Active Directory user, but cannot be stored on the client (must be read from the card) - .p12 files are specifically disallowed on the network. The DB server is not a Windows system, though it has some ability to interact with AD at the OS level. Would prefer not to use Oracle Internet Directory because of the extra cost and administrative / architectural overhead. Thoughts?
