Last Reference number in People Soft Payables

 If I change the last reference number in people soft payables > Bank Accounts> payment method it gives me a message

Warning The last ref number you input #(this is the wire reference number) does not match the last Ref number recorded in the database

What is the impact of this on the system?  Can I change the number to a higher number. We need to do this as some of the wire numbers are same as check numbers and we want to be different ranges.
