Document of Record - setup question and self service view

I would like to use the function called Document of Record in HR and found reference document #409106.1 with some help on setup but am struggling a bit.  Does anyone know of a better white paper for this setup?  Also, document of record can be used with Emp SS and I would like to have documents visible in Emp SS but as view only.  I think I can personalize the page for that purpose (remove buttons, etc) but am interested if documents are actually visible if loaded in Core HR rather than at Emp SS point of entry.
