duplicate asset

My client has created two assets and one of the asset has been duplicated .. this is the two month old scenario ..now they have also depriciated .. now they want to delete tthis duplicate asset ...
 I know we can not delete directly ... What can we do now ...
we have two approaches as of now : 

1 . Retire asset 
2. made the cost of asset to Zero  

pls recommend which is better or can i do any other thing apart from these two
