How To Catalog a Backuppiece On SBT_TAPE?

Hi DBAs:

This is a single instance 10.2.0.4 on linux-x86-64.  Backups work with NetBackup to a VTL; NetBackup retention is 60 days.  I set RMAN retention to a recovery window of 28 days and run "delete obsolete" daily. 

The RMAN catalog does expire and remove content correctly based on the retention policy.  Now the problem:  if I need something that is no longer visible to RMAN, but still exists in the VTL, how do I get it back?

The catalog command reference (from the B/U Recovery Reference) states "You cannot use CATALOG to catalog a backup piece that exists on an sbt device."  However, I found
