oracle 10 runtime to full version upgrade

We have oracle runtime 10g (10.2.0.2.0 ) installed which came with Serena/Dimension. I am trying to upgrade to 10.2.0.1.0 and than to 10.2.0.5. I can install the binary in a new oracle_home. During the installation, it offers to upgrade the database but fails. I cann't start the databse using new oracle_home.

As the database is 10.2, I had a impression that binary upgrade will take care. In my development environment, this trick worked but not working on another test environment before I go to prod.

Any help will be highly appreciated.
