Compress PDF Output in XML Publisher

In the Administration section of XML Publisher, there is a parameter called PDF Output / Compress PDF output.  Options are NULL, True and False.  I have set this parameter to all three selections and completed my process and printed my document.  I don't ever see a difference.  Can anyone tell me what this setting does and how I should be using this parameter?
