PAY: Issues running Check Writer and Check Writer XML on 11.5.10.2

We recently upgraded to the Archive (XML) setup for Check Writer and Deposit Advice but now we're seeing issues running the old (non-XML) Check Writer for third party payments.  Per article #549701.1, these are still not supported by Check Writer XML and no ETA has been provided for this fix so it looks like we'll have to continue to run both.
To run each version of check writer, we're having to switch PY variables everytime - has anyone found a better way to do this?  We might be experiencing bug #9492273 but this hasn't been resolved by Oracle.
