Best Practices for Product Warranty and Extended Warranty Management in CRM On Demand?

Can anyone provide me with some Best Practices for Product Warranty and Extended Warranty Management in CRM On Demand? 

For example, product warranties managed in the Asset record type?  Are Extended Warranties managed as a 'Service' in the Product record type?  How are purchased Extended Warranties applied to an existing Asset?
