Archiving files from the file vault

We're quickly using up our available file vault space.  I'm curious what sort of file archiving solutions folks are utilizing.  I've read about the autopurge option, but understand that's not really an archive but is really a true purge.  Has anyone implemented a more advanced file archiving solution or at least come up with a way to save what is deleted by the autopurge process?
