Using RMAN to create Dataguard standby db.

 A quick quesiton, I am trying to use "duplicate database " RMAN to create standby db, but my question is do I have to use catalog instead of control file? or my question is if I use RMAN to create standby, does that mean I have to use RMAN with catalog.
