Web Client versus JAS (HTML) server

 Can someone please expain the difference and purpose of Web Client and JAS (HTML) server. The Oracle documentation seem to not differentiate but looks like they are separate products. For example, do we need to install Web Client on the JAS server?

Where we use the Web client and for what purpose?

I am eagerly for a document to expalin in detail the difference and purpose of both. Does Web client is required in E1 9.0. If we are using HTML (JAS) server, where we install the Web client.
