Are 3 IP addresses required for a SCAN?

 We are in the process of upgrading our clusterware from 10g to 11g.  We have a limited number of IP's available for setting up the SCAN.  Oracle recommends 3 IP addresses but doesn't say what might happen if you don't.  So my questions are: What might or might not happen if we use a SCAN with just 1 IP?
Are there any other considerations for setting up a SCAN with just 1 IP?
