Unable to login to Solaris 10 via console or SSH using NIS accounts

I'm looking to see if anyone has ever seen this problem before or have any guidance into fixing it. We have one Solaris 10 server running on Sparc hardware (5.10 Generic_142900-03 sun4v sparc SUNW,Sun-Blade-T6320) that now we can only login using the root account.  If we try to login using our own personal login which is retrieved through a NIS server, the system will "hang" or do nothing until we cancel the request.  Enabling debugging on both the client and server side shows that on the server side when it tries to read the public key file (correct permissions are set)
