Pull data from external applications to Agile

Hi,

I would like to know if there is any way that we can pull-in data from External applications to Agile. External applications are internally developed which are Java and dotnet based application.
One ways which i know to pull-in data from External applications to Agile is by using import module available in Agile, Get the data from external application and build it as an XML or flat file so that Agile can import the data.

Please suggest if there is any other better ways.
