Upgrading to 11g: Software Only Installation and Error INS-35351

We have a 2 node cluster running at 10.2.0.4. New HOMES for the database and grid infrastructure (GI) have been created on each node for the 11g stuff. We have successfully installed the GI software with appropriate patches on both nodes under the new GI HOME. We have not yet upgraded the currently running 10g clusterware to 11g.
We would now like to install the 11g database software only on each node. The installer gives us the option for a cluster database installation and to install it only on one node. When we proceed from this point, it throws an INS-35351 "inconsistent version" error, stating that the 10g version of the running cluster is lower than the database version we're trying to install.
