What is ipmitool and how do I use it?

The technology ipmitool is a client / server connection protocol that runs on your modern Oracle / Sun service processor to allow for remote data collection and administration. Think of ipmitool as an app that you run on your laptop or workstation to collect information and status about all your servers in your data centre.
This command line app connects to the service processor of your platform and performs management tasks for you remotely.
Rather than logging into each server, use or script ipmitool to do the work for you and alert you when needed.
