Primary DB to Physical Standby DB failover with both running Standard Edition; questions

Has anyone had any experience maintaining primary and physical standby databases that are running Standard Edition?  For budgetary reasons, we could only afford Standard Edition on both our databases meaning we can't use Data Guard or Goldengate, and we just acquired our physical standby this year after running the primary by itself for almost 2 years. EDIT: I should also add that my company does not have a dedicated DBA, so I'm only going off of what MOS and oracle docs are saying so far

primary: windows server 2003 r2, 11g r1 11.1.0.6.0, application server 10.1.2.0.2

standby: windows server 2008, 11g r1 11.1.0.6.0, SOA suite 10.1.3.1.0

We need to test out a failover scenario that would leave the Standby activated as the new primary database while using the old primary as a new standby.

Howdy, Stranger!
