System Admin User Type is External

We are currently working on an upgrade assignment, where we have noticed that some of the users have the user type as EXTERNAL when we query it on the User Definition screen using the System Administrator responsibility.

Can anyone let me know what does the status EXTERNAL means on the User defintion screen.
