'Item' or 'Item Category' mandatory?

 Hi,

While entering item information into purchase requisition or purchase order form,

a) How to make the input of 'Item' and NOT 'Item category' as mandatory field?

b) How to make the input of 'Item category' and not 'Item' as mandatory field?
