Standard for Test and Enterprise for Production?

Just curious, can you license your test environments with Standard Edition vs running your production with Enterprise?  I do realize that this can/ should not be done for many environments.  However, there may be some that can be done this way.  I'm just trying to see if it's allowed.  I would appreciate your feedback.
