barcoding in header

 i have done this before, but can't remember exactly what i had to do.  i want to use a barcode in a header of my rtf in bi publisher. 

Given the data <?DELIVERY_ID?>  what do i have to add to it so the barcode will appear in the pdf?  I thought I had to do this:  *<?DELIVERY_ID?>* and then use the barcode font.  Looks fine in the rtf, but when I preview in pdf i'm getting *882031627*

Please advise.
