result_cache_mode = AUTO

Is AUTO a supported option for result_cache_mode in 11g?

I have an Oracle University 11g New Features guide for 11.1 that states the following:

"When set to AUTO, the optimizer determines which results are to be stored in the cache based on repetitive executions."

I've read from many other online sources that it does not work and is not supported by Oracle.

What is the official Oracle corp. stance on the AUTO setting?  If it is not supported, why to I have a new features guide that says it is?
