The 'By' Function - Where is a good place to get a tutorial of how this works?

 I want to know more about the 'by' function in CRM but I'm having trouble.  I was paging through the Lairson book and found information about it, but is there a more comprehensive overview of the function somewhere on the net?
If there are any sites that have good information about functions in general, I'd love to get some links.
