OIE - Cumulative Mileage

I am trying to enable functionality to use logic to apply mileage reimbursement rates for Ireland since they have several rates depending on 1) Mileage accumulated  2) Ownership of Vehicle and 3) Size of engine in vehicle.

What I am interested in first knowing is how the Cumulative mileage works in Oracle.  If I setup a Policy Schedule for Mileage, enabling the "Distance Threshold" optional rule and enter 6437km as the distance threshold with the option "Per Period" selected, what does "Per Period" mean?  Does it mean per monthly period?  I would like it to be per calendar year, but I don't know what this "Per Period" means and how to set what "Per Period" means.
