Invalid charaters in Excell

I hae created a Data Definition that will give the the XML data. I then import this XML data into WORD to create my Template. When I preview the data in EXCELL each column has invalid (undisplayed and unprinted) characters. To see that I insert a new column next to the one I want to inspect and do a =len(column). It return always 2 extra as what is displayed. How can I get rid of this, as the users does not want to use any XML reports anymore as this causes then problems. Please help
