Can somebody tell me how to connect to serial console

Hi,
We have a solaris 10 server SPARC V490 and it had a VGA console connected trhough a KVM switch but unfortunately it has died!!! I need to therefore connect to the serial port but unsure what I need to do with the old console. I have powered the old console off without negative effects (dropping back to OK prompt) but believe serial console (RJ45) will not work with old one still connected.

Is it safe to remove old console and conncet serial?
