My company based on supplier issues has decided to reserve inventory based on the creation date of the sales order.  We also have a very large reservation time fence. So if I have an order placed today with a scheduled ship date on an item with a 5 day lead time is set as Sept 20th, and inventory is onhand, we will reserve that inventory to that item.  If an order is placed tomorrow with a scheduled ship date of Aug 9th, we will not reserve that inventory even though we could have bought the product a few times to meet
