On October 12, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced that employers do not need to report the value of group health insurance coverage on each employee’s Form W-2 for 2011. The IRS said that the reporting requirement is optional in 2011, but will be mandatory for 2012. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), signed into law March 23, 2010, mandated the reporting requirement in an effort to provide employees with better information about the value of their healthcare benefits.
