PDF Template - Using barcode font 3of9

I have an Oracle Report and a PDF template (industry standard form which I have modified to our needs).  The PDF output must display 4 of the fields in barcode 3of9 format.  I believe we need to add the start and end character (and asterisk) to the beginning and end of the barcode field value.  Anyone know best way to do this?
