need to reopen a cost period

Hello, We closed our inventory period early and would now like to reopen it but that does not appear to be allowed.  Is there something i can do to allow us to re-open our inventory period?  If not can someone explain why Oracle prevents this?  thanks, we're on 11.5.10.2.
