should I use configurator or JDE kit

Need to find a way to configure a 'kit' like in the inventory and not sure should I use configurator or KIT processing.

The idea is for the customer to, say buying items 1 and get item 2 automatically.  I know I can use free goods or put up a configurator, the combination of item 1 and 2 doesn't change and I don't want the inventory people to do anything in advanced pricing.  So thinking of using KIT as in JDE terms but don't know how to set-up and will that introduce work order.  Just want to see if anyone has done similar thing before.  Also if I do that as a configurator item, I will have a configured item as the child of another configurator item and it
