Increasing the maximum type custom fields

Hello,

How does one increase the maximum number of custom field types under Opportunities?  I am receiving a message stating, "You have reached your limit of type 'Number' custom fields available for 'Opportunity.'  I have used both the standard field and entered custom fields.  My organization simly has many metrics it wants to capture.  Thank you for your assistance.
