Excel template with more than 65k rows

Does anyone know if Excel templates support reports with more than 65k rows? My reports are producing corrupted spreadsheets.
Background:
I have a couple of reports which return more than 65k rows. They used RTF templates with output in Excel. The problem was the OPP ran a long time and it created huge files as the output is XHTML rather than binary excel. I have moved to excel templates to address these issues. The reports run fine when I have less than 65k rows (supported by excel 2003) however large data sets produce corrupted spreadsheets.
