How to patch 100+ instances?

Hello,
Is it true that patching Oracle Database is a primarily manual process?
How can a team of DBAs handle 3-months update cycles for more than 100 instances?
Furthermore is it true that if, for example, 1 month after applying patches a problem is detected so that the patch must be removed there will probably be loss of data?
