application client connection to 10g rac fails before connecting

We have recently install a 10g rac on centos 5.4 linux.when we try to connect from the client using oracle 9i client  and bde (through our application) we get two or three connection refuses and then connects ok.
after it connects it works ok until we leave it for a while. Then it loses the connection again and we have to retry connecting and then it works again.

I am planning to upgrade to 10g client. Any suggestions what to look.
