Stocking Inventory by Revision Level

We are looking for a way to stock inventory by revision level.  Currently we create a new item number each time we bump a rev on a product or compoent item so that we can stock the item by its revision level.  Does anyone else have this issue?  If yes, have you been able to find an alternate work around?
