Change lot status from no lot control to lot control

Folks,

I need to change an item from no lot control to having lot control. When I go into the item and lot contol is grey so I cannot change. Other items I can change but some I can't. What would make it so I can't change it. It is a new itme with no inventory on hand and only 1 PO placed on the item.

Any help will really be apprciated.
