Oracle 11gR1 on Solaris with ASM to be upgraded to 11gR2

I would like to have a detailed document which would list of the pre and the post tasks for an ASM (GI) upgrade and the database upgrade.  We are planning on an upgrade from 11.1.0.7 on Solaris to 11gR2.   Would there be any benefits on doing it in a 2 phase approach, first the GI and then the database?  Is there a way I can do my primary instance upgrade and the standby instance upgrade at different times?  If there was a way I would like to do my standby first and then my primary.
I am looking at the checklist which would be more specific to Solaris. The pre tasks would include the Software package requirements and the likes..  Thank you.
