Oracle Scan

We are installing 2 node RAC 11gR2 with Grid infrastructure on Netapp using DNFS. Is Oracle SCAN/GNS required?  Can't seem to get past the installer without entering something?  Has anyone gotten this to work if you disable the SCAN and bypass GNS?  Is this supported?
