Is there some good documentation on how to Manage the flash recovery area ?

We have several databases currently that we backup to tape regularly vie NET BACKUP w/ the DATABASE OPTION..  But to help alleviate excessive licensing costs, we are trying to utilize the DB FLASH RECOVERY AREA for storing disk backups and archivelogs,  and then just doing a regular non-rman o/s backup to tape.   My problem is that after the tape backup I need to delete my archivelogs and old backupsets via rman.  But it won't allow me to delete older backupsets.  Is it possible to delete old backupsets if the backups are not rman backups.  Also I occasionally am running out
